At the Senior Housing Complex, 25 Tremko Lane, Ashford
Walkability: Easy; the first 250 feet are designed for people in wheelchairs or with walkers, or toddlers.
Total distance: 0.2 miles
Elevation change: negligible.
Environment: Very peaceful and secluded spot with the Mount Hope River and a creek visible along the way. It's loaded with native plants including a large black walnut just south of the start point and a massive ancient white pine about halfway through the walk. Some native woody plants are identified with surveyor's ribbon.
The first part, which goes straight in, takes you to a wooden deck overlooking the Mt. Hope River, which is just a few feet below. The deck has a built-in bench. This part of the path is wide and flat with a packed stone dust surface, and has a very slight slope down to the deck. Only a few feet from the start, the path enters the quiet woods, and the overlook is secluded and peaceful. 500 feet round trip.
The second part continues in a loop from the overlook, going back to the main path near the starting point. This part of the path narrows, and though it has some stone dust, it is not as flat, and has a little more of a rise. There are benches along the way in this section.
This trail is undergoing removal of many invasive plant species including Morrow's honeysuckle (shrub), barberry, winged euonymus (burning bush), multiflora rose, and Asian bittersweet (vines). Spaces created by removal of invasives is being filled with plants provided by Ashford's Pollinator Pathways group. Watch for information from the Ashford Invasive Plant Working Group if you are interested in learning or helping. Their email address is ashfordinvasiveplants@gmail.com.
Directions: Enter from Pompey Hollow Road (Rt. 44), park past the Farmers Market. Take the first right . There are two parking spots on the right past the pickle ball courts. The trail starts on the right at the drinking fountain (doesn't work).
